Hat Trick Equine

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of hay do you feed?

We feed both 1st cut and 2nd cut hay, depending on the individual horse's needs.

Rounds or squares?

Inside, we always feed squares  Outside, it depends on the paddock. Our outdoor boarders have round bales available at all times, (except during the summer when there is ample grass).

Do you take the binder twine off of the round bales?

Yes, the moment the round bale is put out, the binder twine comes off.  We don't allow our paddocks to be littered with string.

Why is water mentioned so much on this website?

Water is the #1 preventer of colic.  Our facility has been specifically laid out with this in mind: every stall has its own individual faucet. We have put frost-free hydrants at every paddock (along with electrical outlets for winter heating).  This has been a big undertaking but we are serious about water because we are serious about preventing colic.

Can my horse have back shoes?

Only if it is on individual turn-out.

Can I bring my dog?

No.  Sorry, but we don't allow dogs under any circumstances.  We have 3 dogs of our own and they are members of our family.  One is very senior and cannot take the stress of having intruders on his property.  Also, because many of our boarders bring young horses here for training, we do not want unnecessary situations caused by the combination of dogs and less confident young horses.

Do I have to wear a helmet?

For insurance purposes, we ask that all mounted riders wear an approved helmet (and proper footwear).

Can I smoke on the property?

No. We ask that you do your smoking in your car or at your home.  We have enough to keep us busy and don't need to be picking up cigarette butts as an added chore.

Can I bring my own vet/coach/farrier?

All professionals are welcome.  There is a holding fee if you cannot be here when they visit.

Can I book the arena for my lesson?

Because many of our boarders have very busy schedules, we keep the arena open to everyone at all times. You will not have any problem with space even if someone else is riding - our arena is extra large (180x80).  We also have a large outdoor ring and lots of hacking on the property, so there are many options for places to ride.

When can I move in?

As soon as we go over the details of your horse(s)' needs, you can move in and enjoy.  We look forward to having you and your equine partner here.
